DOLLAR UPDATE
By Jordan Chong and Ed Logue
SYDNEY, Aug 29 AAP - The Australian dollar closed lower today, backpedalling towards 86 US cents as investors squared US dollar positions ahead of some key data and a three-day long weekend in the US.
At 1700 AEST, the Australian dollar was trading at 86.10 US cents, down from yesterday's close of 86.76 cents.
During the day, the local currency moved between a high of 86.60 US cents and a low of 86.05 cents.
The Australian dollar ground its way higher through most of today's local session, reaching its intraday high of 86.60 US cents in mid-afternoon trading in an environment of mild US dollar weakness.
It gave up all its gains in the final 90 minutes of the session as investors prepared for another positive round of US data and a Monday's Labour Day public holiday in the US.
"The Aussie has generally pushed up higher in the last couple of domestic sessions only to come back down through the overnight session off the back of US data," Westpac currency strategist Jonathan Cavenagh said.
"Generally, data this week has been surprising on the upside out of the US so people might have wanted to avoid that volatility."
US data tonight includes personal income and personal spending figures for June, as well as the Chicago PMI for August - a manufacturing survey.
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) will hold its monthly board meeting on Tuesday, with the Australian Bureau of Statistics to publish June quarter gross domestic product data (GDP) the following day.
Mr Cavenagh said he expected the Australian dollar to trade between 85 and 87 US cents in the lead up to the RBA board's decision, which was expected to be a 25 basis point cut to the cash rate, on Tuesday afternoon.
A potential positive for the local currency over the weekend could be higher crude oil prices, particularly if Hurricane Gustav damages oil production platforms off the Louisiana coast of the US.
"That will see the US dollar get sold," Mr Cavenagh said.
The Australian dollar finished at 93.
